The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms that at an inquiry held in Durban on 6 August 2025, Jockey S Veale was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Appendix E and Guideline M on use of the crop). The specifics of the charge were that he misused his crop by striking GLADATORIAN more than twelve times (14) during Race 8, the HKJC Champions Cup (Grade 1), at Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on 27 July 2025. This action was deemed to be unwarranted in terms of the circumstances of the race.
Jockey Veale pleaded guilty to the charge and was found guilty as charged.
After consideration of the evidence, including Mr Veale’s disciplinary record in relation to similar contraventions and the Grade 1 status of the race, the Inquiry Board imposed the following penalty,
- A suspension from riding in races for a period of fourteen (14) days.
- A fine of R54 531 (Fifty-four thousand, five hundred & thirty-one rand).
Jockey Veale waived his Right of Appeal against the penalty imposed and has elected to take his suspension from 11 August to 24 August 2025 (both days inclusive).
