The NHA’s reason for being

The entire purpose of the National Horseracing Authority (the NHA) is “To regulate, govern, serve and promote the sport of horseracing in Southern Africa”. The industry has several sectors which all have their own applicable rules within our rule book, as well as dedicated service departments within our organisation. It is our primary duty to maintain the highest levels of integrity possible, both in the racing industry and in our own institution.

WOMEN IN SPORT SUMMIT 2018 Lead. Conquer. Inspire.

August in South Africa is a time when we celebrate and acknowledge everything “women”.

The National Horseracing Authority was invited to attend the 2018 Women In Sport Summit in Cape Town in mid-August, and I was asked to speak at the summit. It was the culmination of 3 years of planning and the organiser, Debra Barnes, assembled an astonishingly apropos group of speakers and contributors from the sporting, business and media sectors.

The day was filled with various thought-provoking talks, with the opening keynote speaker – the inspirational Professor Shirley Zinn - setting the motivational tone. My focus was on the Diversity and Inclusion Revolution.

I focused on 8 powerful truths and 7 powerful actions to ensure a diversified and inclusive working environment.

FROM THE HORSE’S MOUTH

A New Season with New Challenges

With the renewal of the southern hemisphere racing season on 1 August 2018, July brings down the curtain on a year filled with surprises, disappointments, strikes and many changes.

The Snaith team dominated the entire season, clinching the 2017/2018 Trainer’s Championship, nearly R6.5 million clear of their nearest rival, Sean Tarry. Snaith dominated the features in Cape Town in the summer, and crowned off a superb season by saddling the first three past the post in Gr1 Vodacom Durban July. Mike de Kock will finish in third place on the log.

What a phenomenal year it has been for Apprentice Jockey Lyle Hewitson. The last apprentice to win the Jockey’s Championship was Michel “Muis” Roberts, all the way back in the 1973.

From the Chief Executive

In light of the recent labour issues, The NHA is currently working with industry players to develop a strategy to include and engage the grooms more effectively in the industry.The recent protests, which were in some cases near violent and occurred in all of the major racing jurisdictions during the month of June, have brought the imbalances in the industry to the fore.

 

It is common knowledge that the Grooms entail the largest employed grouping within the industry, and therefore they need to be acknowledged in a meaningful manner. They need to have an officially recognised status, both within the NHA and in the industry in general.We would like to look at establishing a tiered program of registrations, where registered candidates can work towards improving their education, knowledge and experience within the industry.

 

It is often in critical times like these that we are driven to realise that this is the only way forward, as there is a clear moral duty, as well as commercial value (for new growth within the industry) in ensuring that all role players and stakeholders have an opportunity to better themselves, as well as feeling recognised and included.

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA, IDENTIFIED AS HOST FOR 38TH ASIAN RACING CONFERENCE IN FEBRUARY 2020

After a memorable week of informative business sessions, the 37th Asian Racing Conference (ARC) came to an end on Thursday 17th May. Over the four days, Monday 14th – 17th May, nearly 600 delegates participated in 12 business sessions with 49 different speakers.

A TRIBUTE TO MIKE TILLETT

“A bible takes pride of place on the desk of Michael Tillett. It contains the rules of the Jockey Club of South Africa and is studied as religiously as any clergyman would peruse the scriptures.” So ran an article on former Chairman of the WC Stipendiary Board, Mike Tillett, who we are sad to report, passed away recently at his home in Knysna.

It is rare for regulatory officials to be remembered with fondness by turf goers, but Mike certainly proved the exception to the rule. Firm, but fair, he was respected by all who knew him. As someone who dedicated his life to racing and racing control, it would be remiss not to doff our hat at his passing.

The Journey to Excellence requires that we persevere with our efforts to improve the quality of our service to the industry. 

We must keep going until it becomes a way of life. Even then, we must keep going until our standards are much higher than before. We have to keep going despite constant criticism, insults, badgering, allegations, etc.

Sometimes the criticisms are warranted for various reasons; at times we are slow to react, we don’t communicate clearly and timeously, we don’t necessarily do things in the most efficient manner; but we must be compelled and committed to make the necessary changes. We cannot allow ourselves to stagnate or regress.

EMPOWERMENT

One of the highly rated factors that contributes to job retention is employee empowerment. Empowered to make decisions, to contribute to the organisational development or simply empowered to do their jobs properly. 

Being empowered to serve has been an integral part of the NHA’s turnaround philosophy and process. It is important that employees be given the authority or empowered to make decisions to execute their tasks in a manner which is deemed to be productive.

 

With greater empowerment comes greater confidence! This should surely put us on the journey to excellence.

ACCOUNTABILITY

 In my career I’ve seen so many people easily blame others for mistakes, mishaps or poor performances. Similarly, they can quickly accept praise and honour when sometimes it’s not even due to their own doing. 

 

We need greater accountability for our actions or the lack thereof. Accountability is defined as “an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility or to account for one’s actions.”
