INQUIRY – JOCKEY A FORTUNE
The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa confirms that, at an Inquiry held in Durban on 15 May 2026, Jockey A Fortune was charged with a contravention of Rule 58.10.2, read with Appendix E and Guideline M, relating to the use of the crop.
The particulars of the charge were that Jockey Fortune misused his crop by striking FUTURE FREE more than ten times, namely 17 times, during the running of Race 8 at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse on 15 April 2026.
Jockey Fortune pleaded guilty and was found guilty as charged.
In mitigation, Jockey Fortune submitted that the previous crop penalty framework, which applied prior to 1 April 2026, ought to apply to his matter. The Inquiry Board considered these submissions, including issues relating to notice, implementation and the coming into effect of the revised crop penalty framework.
The Inquiry Board found that the revised crop penalty framework, which came into effect on 1 April 2026 following adoption by the National Board and publication in the Racing Calendar, was applicable to the matter.
After considering all relevant factors in mitigation, including Jockey Fortune’s penalty record pertaining to this Rule, the Inquiry Board imposed a penalty of a fine of R14,000 and a suspension from riding in races for a period of 14 days.
Jockey Fortune has the right of appeal against the penalty imposed.
