AUTHORISED RACE DAY SUBSTANCES

AUTHORISED RACE DAY SUBSTANCES

The following substances are approved for administration on a race-day, as detailed in the Rules of the NHA, Appendix O:

  • Ammonium Chloride Salts;
  • Vitamin B1;
  • Calcium; and
  • Homeopathic preparations used in the prevention of Exercise Induced Pulmonary Haemorrhage (EIPH).

The total combined volume of such preparations and substances may not exceed 500ml. The Veterinary Treatment Register (VTR) has to be completed with the relevant details whenever a horse receives such preparations and substances.

It is a contravention of the Rules to administer any other substance topically, orally, by injection, by inhalation, by drenching, by infusion or any other method other than normal feed and water by mouth, on the day of a race meeting.

Any deviations from the above may result in significant penalties being imposed.

The NHA is committed to international harmonisation of the rules of racing and may revoke this authorisation in the interests of horse welfare and racing integrity.
