The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms that at an Inquiry held in Gqeberha on Friday, 25 July 2025, Jockey J Gates was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7. The particulars being that as the rider of MAFIABAGSTHEMONEY, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to SEMPRE BELLA (*J Botes) and CELTIQUE (M Katjedi) when he shifted out at the 450m in Race 1 at Fairview Racecourse on 04 July 2025.


The National Horseracing Authority confirms that at an Inquiry held in Johannesburg on Tuesday, 22 July 2025, Jockey S Khumalo was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7.  The particulars being that, as the rider of MISS HANNIGAN, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to QUEEN OF LOVE (P Strydom) when he shifted in away from the crop in the concluding stages in Race 7 at Turffontein Racecourse on 28 June 2025.  


The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms that an Appeal was heard at its offices in Johannesburg on Thursday, 24 July 2025. 

Background: 

At an Inquiry held in Cape Town on Tuesday, 25 March 2025, Jockey G van Niekerk was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7. The specifics of the charge were that, whilst riding ALL OUT FOR SIX, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to THE GREY KING and ONE STRIPE when he shifted in at the 150m in Race 8 of the HSH Princess Charlene Big Cap run over 1400m at the Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse on 16 March 2025. 


The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms that at an Inquiry held in Gqeberha on 23 July 2025, Jockey S L Naidoo was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7. The particulars being that as the Rider of WALTZING DOLL, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to OLIVE OYL and RED ORCHID RISING when he shifted out at the 400m during Race 1 at Fairview Racecourse on 14 July 2025.   


The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms that at an Inquiry held in Cape Town on 21 July 2025, Jockey G Lerena, who attended the proceedings virtually, was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7. The particulars being that as the Rider of SEEKING THE STARS, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to FUTURE VARIETY and QUESTIONING when he shifted in at the 100m during Race 8 at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse on 22 February 2025.   


The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms that at an Inquiry held in Durban on Tuesday, 15 July 2025, which was adjourned and reconvened on Monday, 21 July 2025, Trainer Gareth van Zyl was charged with a contravention of Rule 72.1.18.  The particulars being that, as a licensed Trainer, he verbally abused a licensed official involved in the administration or control of racing during a telephone conversation on Tuesday, 17 June 2025. 


The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms that at an Inquiry held in Johannesburg on Thursday 10 July 2025, adjourned and resumed on 12 July 2025, Jockey G Lerena was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.7.  The particulars being that, as the rider of KEY NEWS, he failed to ensure that he did not cause interference to GUERILLA WARFARE (M Yeni) when he shifted out at the 400m during Race 7 at the Vaal Racecourse on 3 July 2025.  


The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (NHA) confirms that at an Inquiry held in Cape Town on 7 July 2025, Jockey G Wright was charged with a contravention of Rule 62.2.3.  The particulars being that he failed to ride WORLDLY out to the end of the race, where circumstances permitted, to the satisfaction of the Stipendiary Stewards in Race 9, the HOLLYWOODBETS BRIGHT FUTURE CLASS 4, at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse on 17 June 2025.   


The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa (the NHA) confirms that at an Inquiry held at its offices in Port Elizabeth on 26 June 2025, Trainer Mr L Gila was charged with contraventions of Rules 73.2.2 and 73.2.3.
